Sermon Title: It Starts with Tears
Text: Nehemiah 1:1-4 (NLT)
Focus: Today, we will begin exploring Nehemiah’s story. He told how his heart broke when he heard about the condition of his homeland. That led him to return to Jerusalem and participate in the renovation work God was doing there, physically and spiritually, among the people. But it all started with tears. And that’s often true for us. We don’t renovate when everything is OK. A rebuild starts with tears almost every time.

Sermon Title: Before You Build
Text: Nehemiah 2:11-18
Focus: We will continue exploring Nehemiah’s story, including how he cried, mourned, fasted, prayed, planned, and examined the conditions of the city. Finally, he told someone about the dream that God had given him. When he told others, they were ready to join him, knowing that renovation is hard, requires faith, and is all about God’s power.

Sermon Title: It Takes a Village

Sermon Title: When Others Don’t Like Your Plans
Text: Nehemiah 4:1-6
Focus: Some people opposed the work that Nehemiah and others were doing to rebuild Jerusalem, but they pressed on. They remembered their story of how God had fought for them in the past and how God would continue to fight for them. But God was not done, and God would see them through to the end. There comes a point in every successful renovation that we want to give up. The work is hard, and the opposition is great.

Sermon Title: The Big Reveal
Text: Nehemiah 8:13-18 (NLT)
Focus: Just as the Israelites are finally getting settled back home, Ezra reminds them of a celebration that they had forgotten about, something that they hadn’t celebrated for years: the Festival of Booths. They decided to take a break and celebrate this annual festival to remember God’s provision and protection both in the past and present. Likewise, in every Big Reveal, God encourages us to remember the journey that came before, to revel in the present goodness, and to allow God to turn our hearts toward where we are going and what is to come.

Summary: Renovating a house can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, the act of renovation can often leave the house in a state of disarray, causing stress and frustration. In the same way, God wants to renovate your life by altering the “old you” and creating a “new you” with an improved heart. It’s not going to be easy, and your life might experience some disarray, but renovating with God is the opportunity of a lifetime. Using the Book of Nehemiah and the book “Renovate” by author and pastor Jacob Armstrong, we will explore the physical and spiritual renovation experienced by the nation of Judah. Nehemiah knew that his plan for renovating the wall and gates of Jerusalem would be hard work. But equally hard would be the spiritual renovation of the Jewish people as they returned to their homeland. Thankfully, spiritual renovation is not a do-it-yourself project. God's great power work is at work in and through us to renovate our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.
