Shrove Tuesday

  • First United Methodist Church 401 South Spring Avenue SIOUX FALLS United States (map)

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The name Shrove comes from word 'Shriven' meaning absolve. Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians who make a point of self-examination to consider the wrongs they need to repent and what areas of spiritual growth they need to ask God's help in dealing with. The other name for this day, Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent.

First United Methodist Church began the Shrove Tuesday Pancake and Sausage Dinner in the 1930s. The dinner is low-cost ($7.00/adults and $3.00/kids) and features "all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, and beverages." Proceeds benefit youth in missions.

The First Church choir sponsors the dinner annually, and each year, many old and new friends come. Come and enjoy a steaming hot plate of pancakes and sausage and fellowship with community members. Tickets are available at the door or stop by the church office.
